It is very important that the plans you do get are of high quality and complete with blue prints and material lists.

BASIC SAFETY points to remember are:

-Wear proper eye protection

-Wear dust mask if required.

Woodworking: Understanding Your Material

Choosing the perfect wood is the most important and primary task before starting on a woodworking project. You cannot entrust the task of choosing to any other person because it is you who knows what is to be done with the wood.

The following are some tips on how to choose the most suitable wood from a lumber mart.

Though there are many kinds of wood, each has distinct characteristics. Identifying these characteristics will help you decide which is the best type of wood to suit your purpose.

Classes of Wood

According to the kind of trees they are obtained from, hardwoods and softwoods are the two major types of wood.

Plants which are categorized as angiosperms are the source of hardwoods. These types of trees bear flowers and have leaves that are broad. On the other hand, coniferous trees, or gymnosperms, supply softwoods. These trees bear seeds but not flowers.

Much to the contrary of its name, softwood is stronger than the hardwood and is used in making frameworks and for flooring purpose.

Grades of Wood

The two grades of woods are 'select' and 'common.'

The select type of wood is of excellent quality and is fully free from blemishes of any kind. Items that require a beautiful finish and 'look' are generally made of this kind of wood.

Woods with flaws in their appearance are the common grade lumbers that are used for general constructional purposes.

Types of Wood

Woods that are best suited for your need can be of various types. The bigger your starting selection of wood types, the more difficulty there is in choosing the right kind for your purpose. Therefore, special characteristics of each kind should be known before choosing the wood.

- When decorative items are needed for general indoor use, pine is the ideal option since it can be stained into a host of colors. It also offers durability and stability and is easy to curve into different shapes, so it is the best option for making cabinets.

- When a smooth look is wanted, poplar suits the bill since it is free of pores. An even smoother look can be obtained by applying a coat of paint.

- When outdoor furniture and fences are to be made, redwood is a great choice since it is naturally resistant to decay.

- Woods that are best suited for making outdoor walls are those that are treated chemically to resist different decaying agents, like moisture.

- Oak, maple, cherry, and some other woods have grain patterns on them which are aesthetically pleasing. They are popular in making sculptural furnishings with accented designs.

- Due to its somewhat reddish hue and its ability to create a nice polished finish, rosewood is commonly used in making musical instruments.

Armed with this knowledge of the characteristics of various types of woods, it will now be easier for you to choose the right wood for the kind of woodworking project you want to make.

Woodworking Shop Plans

When it comes to woodworking, space is obviously a necessity. Unlike knitting or painting, woodworking is a dirty activity and requires its own devoted area so the mess can be confined from the rest of the house. If you lay out your own woodworking shop plans and build your own wood shop, you could have the satisfaction of being able to do your own woodworking projects all at home.

You will want to begin by doing some thorough planning and possibly use space that is already available, like a shed, the basement or a garage. Once you have decided on the location of your woodworking shop, take some time and decide what kind of jobs you will be doing in there. Will you be building small projects, such as bookshelves or will you be taking on larger projects, such as furniture. The size of your projects and the tools required to build them will determine the design of the shop you will need.

One of the primary tools that all wood shops need is a table saw. You will need approximately ten feet of space all around the saw so you will have room to cut long boards. The best place for this saw is the center of the room. Then you can arrange your tool cabinets and work benches around it. You can also put some peg board up and hang smaller tools on the walls. Other tools you will want to consider are a radial arm saw, a miter saw, a band saw, a lathe, a sander, and possibly a jointer. All of these tools allow you more choices to build quality woodworking projects. When deciding on the location of all these tools, make sure you keep the workflow in mind.

Lighting is another important issue. Make sure you have plenty of light, not only for safety reasons but also just to be able to see what you are doing. You will also need to take into consideration the electrical needs of all your tools. It is always best to consult an electrician for this part because you will need professional information on how much power your tools will need. Safety is of most importance when it comes to electrical wiring.

Once the designing is done and your woodworking shop plans have become a reality, you will have many years of enjoyment to look forward to as you create many different wood pieces.

First Basic Steps to Begin Scrolling Designs With Your Scroll Saw

The way that I got my start in the scrolling world, happened when, after seeing a demonstration of a Dremel scroll saw in my local home improvement store. Since I was retired and looking for something to keep me busy, both at home and while on the road with our RV, scrolling designs looked to fit the bill for me. I have always enjoyed working with wood and the size of the scroll saw would make this possible because it would fit in a lower bay of our RV. That is the day I bought my scroll saw.

I thought that I would be able to take the scroll saw home, unpack it and start cutting scrolling designs as intricate as the ones I have seen at craft fairs and swap meets. Boy was I wrong about that. Now don't get me wrong, using a scroll saw is not difficult, it just helps if you are aware of a few of the basics that help make the learning process more enjoyable. After all, why make the same mistakes and have to learn the hard way when others have already made the mistakes and are willing to help so you do not repeat the same ones.

The best thing I did was to go to a class that taught the basics of working with a scroll saw and doing scrolling designs. These types of classes are generally available through your local Adult Education classes or possibly your local craft or woodworking store has classes. There are sometimes people that are willing to teach you the basics of scrolling designs. In my case, the person doing the demo I saw, did have classes for anyone who purchased the Dremel scroll saw. However you learn the basics is up to you but learning the basics will help prevent a lot of frustration and will help you enjoy doing scrolling designs.

The basics I learned helped me be able to then use my scroll saw with more confidence. I learned how to hold and guide the work piece when doing the basic cuts such as curves, corners, circles and straight lines. As an example, when cutting a straight line you need to feed your scrolling designs work piece at a slight angle because of the way the scroll saw blades are produced. The blades have a slight burr on one side that will cause it to drift to the right as you make are cutting.

Information that was not covered was all the different types of blades available for a scroll saw. By using the internet, I found information that helped me have general ideas of what types and sizes of blades are best used for different types and thickness of your work piece, be it wood, metal or plastic. Blade selection ends up being the preference of each of you and what you prefer. By seeing what some others opinions are will help you decide which you prefer. The type of blade I like for wood is one with a reverse tooth pattern. I like the reverse tooth because it helps eliminate the fraying you usually will get on the bottom of the scrolling designs you are cutting.

In future articles, I will be supplying more information concerning doing scrolling designs.

How to Make a Cross Cut Sled Tutorial - Wood Shop Project

This is a step by step tutorial on how to build a cross cut sled. This project was very quick, easy and quite inexpensive to make. It took me from Friday at around 5pm worked till about 8pm that night and then finished up Saturday from about 10am to 12pm. If you are a serious woodworker or even a novice that wants to do more this addition into your shop will be worth its weight in gold. This also helps newcomers that maybe don't have a lot of different tools as this can take place of a sliding compound miter saw as well. Without further ado let's get started!!

1. First thing you are going to need for material is:

A piece of plywood of some kind that must be at least ¾" in. thick (I used mahogany as it was on sale) A strip of hardwood around 6' long x ¾" wide x 3/8" thick (purpleheart, oak, maple something hard that isn't as susceptible to swelling and contracting)

2. Now rip your piece of plywood to 34" w x 30" long

3. Next rip your strips of hardwood down to fit into your table saw runners. This is probably about ¾" wide x 3/8" thick which is a fairly universal measurement for the table saw runners but double check your table saw just in case. You want these to fit snug with very little slack in it, it should slide freely but not very much side to side movement.

4. Once you have the pieces in the runners fitting nicely then place them in the runners and place your piece of plywood on top and make sure it is flush with the working edge of the table saw deck. Then put your square flat on the edge of the plywood and make a line for the center of the runner board and then carry that line the length of the board. Use this line to be able to drill your holes and use a counter sinking bit and screw it to the plywood from the face down, put between 4 and 5 screws into each runner.

5. Next cut 4 strips of plywood 4 ½" high x 27" long x ¾" thick

6. Now glue 2 boards together to make 2 handles 4 ½" high x 27" long x 1 ½" thick

7. Clamp them together and let the glue dry overnight

8. Now you have your handles for the sled created

9. Now mark out some cut outs that are approx. 7" from each end and 2" from the top. Use a coffee mug or round object to create a radius and use your jigsaw to cut it out. Do this on both handles, this allows for an easier grip for you to be able to work the sled with.

10. Now that you have that done sand it really good on all the edges and run it through your router with a chamfer or rounded bit just to break the sharp edge off so it's easier on your hands.

11. Now your handles and deck are complete now it's just a matter of connecting to two pieces.

12. First is make sure the deck is on your table saw and sitting in the runners and with your blade all the way down, turn on your table saw and slowly raise the blade till the teeth of your blade are sticking up about 1 tooth high then push the sled away from you till the blade is about 2" from the edge of the deck. DO NOT CUT IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH YET!!

13. Now place the handle that is on the user side of the table saw on making sure it is flush with the edge of the deck closest to you now place a clamp on there and use your counter flush bit and drill your hole and screw just ONE side of the handle for now.

14. Now that one side is attached take a piece of scrap and cut a small piece the same width as the kerf of your blade (mine was just shy of 1/8") but make sure its snug and it can sit in the slot by itself without being held.

15. Now take your biggest square and put an edge against the unattached side of the handle and the other side against the scrap piece you have stuck in deck slot. Now you can move the unattached side of the handle until it is perfectly square with the scrap of wood then clamp it in place and drill and screw it down with 4 - 5 screws.

16. The other handle needs no calibration, just make it flush with the edge of the plywood and drill and screw it down.

17. Now you can run your cut all the way through your sled and you are now finished!!

Congrats you have built yourself a cross cut sled for your table saw. Please check out the how to make a cross cut sled tutorial I have done as well if there is any confusion on the directions above.

5 Reasons To Build Your Own Shed

If you're still in doubt about building your own shed, let me help you out. Here are 5 reasons why you should build your own shed, and why you should get started with it as soon as possible.

1- Storage space. If you're like most people then you have an excessive amount of junk stored up in the spare room, attic or garage. And it makes for plenty of clutter and irritation. Building a shed may be a perfect solution for extra storage space so that you don't have to throw away things you don't use but would still like to keep. You'll be amazed at how much you can store in a 12x16 shed in your back yard, and it'll totally be out of the way but still be right there if you need it.

2- A real workshop. If you're tired of not having space for tools or for your handyman work, then a shed can be your answer. I know that you can use your garage if you have one, but then you need to move your car every time you want to do something and it's just annoying. In a shed you could give all your tools a fixed place, you could place one or two workbenches with a vice grip, and you would have plenty of space to work on whatever it is you want to fix or create. And all your tools would be safely locked up and out of the way of kids or other people who could hurt themselves accidentally.

3- A gym or sauna. If you're a busy man and don't have time to hit the gym or exercise regularly because you need to go somewhere to be able to do it, then why not make your own gym shed. It can be a beautiful and good designed shed where you could place all your workout equipment, including treadmills and bicycles. And don't worry about the construction, because you can make it plenty sturdy to be able to support all that weight. You could also add a separate section to place a sauna which I personally really enjoy. It would be great for friends and the rest of your family too. And then you'll be able to exercise whenever you want, just step into your back yard.

4- A garden shed. I've already mentioned storage space, but what about space for all your garden equipment. Spades, shovels, fertilizer, chemicals, lawnmowers. You don't want that stuff in your house or garage. If you have a faily big garden, then you need a place to store all the tools and equipment. Build a shed!

5- Save money. If you look at prices for custom or ready built sheds, then they will often run into thousands of dollars. You can build your own shed for a fraction of the price, and on top of that have the satisfaction of knowing that you built it with your own two hands. That's worth something too. It's really not hard to build your own shed once you buy the right guide and blueprint that'll take you through every step of the process.

So there you have it, 5 reasons why you should build your own shed. Are you excited to get started yet?

Create A Queen-Sized Bed With Woodworking Bed Plans

There are certain pieces of furniture in a house that are essential and one of these is a bed. It doesn't matter what kind of bed, be it single, double, Queen or even King-sized, but the fact of the matter is, everybody sleeps on a bed of some type for usually for a good 6-8 hours every day. With a piece of furniture so essential to everyday living, wouldn't it be great if you could save the high cost of buying this bed by learning how to make one for yourself using woodworking bed plans.

Well there's no reason why you can't do this nowadays as there are a multitude of woodworking plans on the market allowing you to create any manner of bespoke furniture items for your house.

In this article we'll quickly run through the process for creating a bed from scratch using woodwork plans, so that you too can make a saving on a bed of your design.

Now obviously this quick run through is designed to explain the straightforward nature of building a bed from simple materials, but as you progress in confidence you'll be able to change elements in any set of plans and create a unique piece of furniture.

If we start by taking a look at the wood, we would advise using MDF (medium density fibreboard) for the bed as this will give it an overall strength. For your army of tools you'll require saws, sanding machines or paper and ideally a jigsaw plus nail gun, although obviously you can start with the more manual tools like a simple hammer, but you will find a small investment in tools will make all of your woodwork projects much easier time and effort wise.

Don't forget other sundries including nails, screws, adhesives, filler and spackle to cover over thin cracks in the wood joints.

If we take a Queen-sized bed as standard, the dimensions measure eight by four feet. Take a piece of MDF and build the headboard first, this should measure four feet in width to match the bed frame, but the height is up to you, although we would suggest two to three feet in height.

After you have your headboard it is time to build the sides and footboard, also by using MDF. Depending on the look of your bed, you could design the footboard along similar lines to the headboard dimension wise, as long as it also measures four feet in width. The sideboards should obviously be eight feet in length.

By utilising a powered jigsaw, the above steps should be quick and painless and if you're feeling fancy you can even cut the top and tail boards to include curved edges. Use your sand/emery paper or sanding machine to smooth out any rough edges.

Attach the sideboards to the headboard and footboard using small screws and some wood adhesive, being careful not to crack the wood by using screws which are too big. Next we do the outer trims, which should again be cut using the same dimensions as the bed. Attach these to the bed frame.

Now we move on to the slats which add stability to the bed. Cut a dozen of these pieces and attach them between the sideboards at regular even intervals. These can be screwed to the bed frame using small screws. If you have small joint cracks you can apply some of the filler/adhesive/spackle you bought to fill these in.

Always perform a strength check at this point as any inherent weaknesses will be amplified at the finished stage by loose joints or cracked wood during the building process. The slats and connected bed frame should be able to take your full adult weight spread evenly over the entire bed. Although people often stand on beds, this is only on top of the mattress which evenly distributes the weight across all of the slats.

If you find any weaknesses or cracked wooden beams, remove and replace these parts and ensure all connections and joints are tight.

Your bed frame should now be complete, all you need to do is drop on the mattress and duvet and fix those hospital corners and the bed is ready for some serious sleeping.

Creating a simple bed is really that simple, although clearly any woodworking bed plans you use or purchase will go into much greater detail, but hopefully this article has allayed any fears about the possibility of building your own bed from scratch.

Custom Built Bird Houses

So you want to install custom built bird houses on your property to match your house, barn, shed, or maybe your lake house. The real question should be is what do the wild birds want? More importantly what do the wild birds need? Is there a way to make a cute looking bird house and also make it functional for the birds?

The answer is mixed and it really depends on what you are looking for and where your interests lie. Are you more concerned about making your yard look pretty or are you more interested in providing the wild birds with quality nesting boxes? It could be both, but in my experience the home owner usually is more interested in one or the other.

If you are looking to have a bird house look just like your home or lake house and you don't have a deep desire for wild birds, then my recommendation is to make what looks like a really cool birdhouse, but don't have any actual cavity openings. Instead just paint black circles where you would normally put an entry hole.

On the other hand if you are more concerned about the wild birds and your desire is to attract them to your yard with nesting boxes then my recommendation is to buy or build the right bird house for that species of bird. Cavity nesting species of wild birds all prefer a particular size of cavity to build a nest. In the wild they don't always get the perfect cavity they are looking for, but putting up nesting boxes of the right size can be very rewarding.

The big box stores are not where you want to shop for a nesting box. Even if you think it looks cute don't waste your money. Wildlife specialty stores are a much better place to get good information on what nesting box works best for the kind of bird you are interested in attracting.

There are a few things you will want to know before shopping for a birdhouse. The nest box should have a peg for perching on the front of it as no cavity nesting bird needs a peg on the box. Make sure the nest box can be easily opened for cleaning each fall. Also the nest box should have vent holes on the sides, back, and the bottom.

Cavity size is very important also so make sure you do your homework before purchasing or making just any kind of box. The entry hole diameter and the distance the entry hole is above the floor is important for every species of cavity nesting bird.

My recommendation is to either put up fully functional bird houses that the bird would really like to use. Or make or buy a decorative bird house with doors, windows, gutters, and curtains but make sure you paint the fake entry holes black. With a decorative bird house you don't have to worry about cleaning it because the birds should not be able to get inside it.

Some Costs You Should Keep Track of When Operating a Home Woodworking Business

As with any business starting a woodworking business from home requires a plan. Part of his plan must include some way of keeping track of costs. Whether this is the cost of materials used or the cost of labour, you must keep track. This will tell you if are making a profit or not.

The amount of you spend on material is simple to keep track of. This involves keeping an itemized list of the materials purchased for each project. The material purchased might also be for several projects. This is a fixed cost after you have made your purchases. At the start you will often be buying more than you need, so you will have extra materials for your next projects. This extra material should be considered stock on hand. It will be part of your inventory.

Another important cost to consider is the cost of labour. If you choose to build the woodworking projects yourself you will be receiving a salary or some form of compensation from your company. You could determine the actual rate of pay based on a percentage of material costs. This would be for a number projects you would normally complete in the course of one or two weeks. Your salary could also be based on what you have to pay someone else to do the job. this would be based on the labour rates in your area for that kind of specialized work.

Do not confuse your salary with any profit the company makes. Salary is fixed, while profit is variable and depends on how well you run your company. The profit your company makes is the reward you reap for the risk you take for being an entrepreneur.

Woodworking Projects Can Be Tricky

If you have some pending woodwork to be done at your home, you got to be very careful about planning things up for it. To be honest, there is not a perfect time to complete all your pending woodworking projects. The reason is that woodwork is an extremely time consuming process. No matter when you start doing it, it will always end up interfering with other responsibilities of yours. It can even mess up your house since it can produce a lot of dust. This can cause inconvenience to other members in your family, especially kids. Kids are really sensitive to dust and the dust emanating from the wood material can cause serious allergic reactions to your kids.

In spite of all these obstacles, you might want to complete your woodworking projects as soon as possible since pending woodwork can really play on your mind. You can outsource such work to professional carpenters. There is no dearth of carpenters in USA or in any other country in the world and they can do a great job. But, the price may not be reasonable for others.

It is important to set a proper budget for all your woodwork projects and track all the expenses involved in buying material needed for your woodwork projects. Even if you get professional carpenters to do the job, it is important to monitor their spending activities. Most carpenters wouldn't really care for your budget as they would be more focused on their work. Some of them may even purposefully buy needless material which may shoot up your budget. It is important to know how much wood is required for your projects much before you start them. You may have to do some research before starting so that you know exactly what you are doing. There are plenty of online resources available on woodwork.
